Mycoremediation: From the Field to the Lab and Back Again

Fungi are the great healers of Earth, upholding an array of unique ecological roles that no bacteria, plant, or animal can match. In this presentation, Peter will show how these natural functions of fungi can be intentionally worked with by humans in a variety of ways to mitigate pollution, restore degraded lands, build soil, strengthen ecosystems, and create cleaner water. From home-scale techniques that anyone can practice, to insights into the tools behind broadscale remediation efforts, this talk will provide you with a solid foundation in the theory and methods behind the rapidly evolving and exciting field of mycoremediation.

Remediation in the Mycorrhizosphere

Decomposer fungi often steal the spotlight when it comes to discussions on mycoremediation. But, did you know that many endo and ectomycorrizal (soil dwelling) fungi can also degrade toxic pollutants, accumulate heavy metals, and reduce the impacts of environmental disturbances? In this talk, join Peter for a tour of the underground world of mycorrhizal fungi and the various means by which they can be cultivated and applied in landscapes to reduce pollutant loads and increase environmental and human resilience

Fungusland MycoRemedation

Bring your plastic bottles to be recycled in a micro model of a fungisland, a living floating island hosting a fungal mass and local aquatic plants. Fungislands can be utilized to aid in remediation of contaminated ponds and lakes. Learn about the successes and failures of the first fungisland experiment, effective scientific procedure, and testing water sources before, and after.

Mark Jones and Kris Holstrom will discuss growing mushrooms on Ailanthus, thistle and introduce the Eat Your Weeds project to convert invasive and opportunistic plant species into edible mushrooms, while also focusing on community based systems for stroring and sharing information to improve the education of the processes in developing novel food production system for humans and livestock alike.

Oyster mushrooms will grow on just about any agricultural by-product. In this session attendees will be able to learn the skills needed for both hot water bath and cold lime treatments for pasteurizing cereal straws for oyster mushroom production. Take home items will be small bags of inoculated oyster kits!

Human-Fungal Relations: Past, Present, and Future

Mycology is proving itself to be a nearly inexhaustible field for innovation. As new discoveries are constantly being made, there seems to be no end to what fungi can offer humans, their communities, and the environments they touch. However, these revelations are only the most recent chapter in the long-standing history that humans have shared with fungi. In this presentation, Peter will explore the depth and breadth of ethomycological history, from the centrality of micro and macro fungi in many prehistoric cultures to their increasingly significant influences on modern society and the future of technological design. Obscure and ancient practices with fungi will be presented alongside cutting edge cultivation techniques to show that working with fungi is not only  important, but integral to the human story.
